Travel Tip: Alternatives to Uber and Lyft Around the World

Chances are you’ve either heard about or used on demand ground transportation services like Uber and Lyft, which can be less expensive than traditional taxis. But these aren’t your only alternatives.

In the United Kingdom, the main ridesharing app is called mytaxi, formerly known as Hailo. Based in Germany, mytaxi is very popular across Europe, operating not just in the U.K. and Germany, but also in Sweden, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Poland. And unlike Uber, it only uses licensed taxi drivers.

In Russia, the most popular app is Yandex taxi, which services are often twice as cheap as those of the regular taxis. It also offers options for passengers with bikes or pets and provides car seats for children of all ages. And you can also pay with cash.

And in China, there is Didi Chuxing. The English version of the app is available in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou and is compatible with American phone numbers and credit cards. Didi Chuxing taxis have quite a unique feature: a safety button for passengers unhappy with their driver.

Brazilians use something called Easy Taxi. One of the perks is its book sharing service. Passengers can actually borrow books from the taxi and return them on their next ride. This begs the question–how long are these rides?
