Travel Tip: Travel Websites and Their Algorithms

I’ve said it before, but it’s important to say it again. The next time you search for flights, hotels or other travel bookings, you want to make yourself as invisible as possible when you go online.

In the world of big data, websites know more about you than you think. They know where you’ve traveled, where you might want to travel and what you might be willing to spend.

In the process, websites are able to construct specific prices based on what they think you’ll be willing to spend.

The algorithms that these sites use know where you traveled last year and if you went solo, because you may have spent less than if you traveled with a significant other. And then this year, they often will price trips for you to those locations based on what they project will be your emotional connection and willingness to pay more. But that defeats your ability to be a better comparison shopper.

So what’s the solution? If you research a fare or destination online and when you return to that website later, either use someone else’s computer or simply clean out your cookies.
