The recent terror attacks in Manchester and London have prompted more interest in travel insurance.

What kind of travel insurance do you need?

Perhaps the more important question—what is actually covered by most travel insurance companies?

Does your travel insurance cover you if you want to cancel a trip because of a terrorist attack? Maybe.

But most insurance will only cover you if the attack happens at a destination on your itinerary within a certain number of days before your scheduled departure.

But what if you’re already at your destination when an attack occurs? Most insurance will cover you.

The same coverage applies if that attack causes flight delays or cancellations.

It also comes down to a definition of terms.

The U.S. State Department has to classify the event as a terrorist attack.

Once that happens, most companies will provide emergency assistance.

However, you must look at your policy carefully to see if there are certain countries or high-risk regions that are already excluded from coverage.
