In the last months of the Obama Administration, the U.S. Department of Transportation proposed a consumer-friendly rule on how airlines disclose the fees they charge.

The rule would require airlines and ticket agents to disclose fees for carry-on and checked bags from the moment you inquire about a fare.

What this means is that an airline couldn’t just show a ticket price and then disclose the fees for baggage once you buy the ticket.

But don’t expect this rule—which provides much needed transparency for consumers—to fly.

The Trump Administration has signaled that this rule may be dead on arrival.

So it remains up to you not to depend on a website for complete information.

Before booking any flight on the web, call the airline and get it to confirm what all the costs may be—before you hit that keystroke on what looks like an attractive fare.
