Travel Tip: How to Determine If You Need Travel Insurance

Locations in this article:  Orlando, FL

planesHere’s a statistic that might surprise you: Only about 20 percent of the people who are eligible and who should be buying travel insurance actually purchase it.

Why? For many of us, travel insurance remains one of the more confusing aspects of the travel experience.

What you’re covered for, what you’re entitled to, and what is excluded seems to confound us every time we consider the subject.

Here’s the bottom line. If you’ve made a significant investment in your trip—not just an $89 airline ticket between New York and Orlando—you need to do your homework and protect yourself.

You want trip cancellation and interruption insurance; and most importantly, you want to secure medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.

If you get sick or injured overseas and don’t have that coverage, you could be looking at a six figure bill just to get you stabilized and back home.

One important tip: never buy insurance through the provider.

Always buy it through a travel agent or from a third party insurer. The coverage will almost always be better.
