Travel Tip: A Pillow Menu? Hotels Get Competitive With Amenities

Locations in this article:  London, England

kimptonSome hotels have become more competitive when it comes to making—and keeping—guests happy.

It all has to do with your hotel bed, pillow, and in at least one case, the temperature of your bed.

More and more hotels are giving guests options for the firmness of their mattresses, and some actually allow you to adjust that firmness by remote control.

But the real competition is in the area of hotel pillows.

It’s no longer a simple choice between feather and down or hypoallergenic.

There are hotels with pillow butlers that offer guests an entire pillow menu—featuring everything from regular pillows to full length body pillows.

This isn’t just a gimmick or a stunt. In my experience, the right pillow often makes the difference between a good night’s sleep, and in some cases, any sleep at all.

Not all hotel attempts at making your sleep experience better have been successful.

A few years ago, a Holiday Inn in London thought guests would appreciate a very special bed warming service.

This comes under the category of you can’t make this stuff up: Fifteen minutes before a guest checked in, a willing hotel staff member would go to his/her room, and literally climb into the bed to warm it. I’m serious.

As you can imagine, the program was so poorly received it was thankfully canceled within a week.
