Travel Tip: The Most Empathetic Countries in the World

ecuadorWhich is the most empathetic country in the world?

Researchers from Michigan State University, the University of Chicago, and Indiana University recently surveyed more than 104,000 people from 63 countries in search of that answer.

They measured each individual’s compassion for others and tendency to imagine another’s point of view.

The results might surprise you.

What was the most empathetic country? Ecuador.

It was followed by—and this is a surprise—Saudi Arabia.

Which country came in third? Peru.

Denmark was the fourth most empathetic country.

How about the U.S.? We came in at number seven.

It should be noted that the survey did not distinguish between empathy for people in other countries and empathy for those within one’s own country.

What country was the least empathetic? Lithuania.

In fact, seven out of the ten countries at the bottom of the list were in Eastern Europe.
