It’s not news that you can rent a home as an alternative to a hotel room. But what’s wild is the unusual types of homes on the market—which means where you sleep becomes part of the experience.

Airbnb has more than 600 castles on its list, everything from a 16th century castle in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to a palace in Rajasthan, India.

Or, how about sleeping on a boat? On VRBO, which stands for Vacation Rentals by Owner, you can rent a houseboat in Amsterdam or even one on your own private island in the Florida Keys.

Speaking of private islands, those are available as well.

Flipkey, which is owned by the same guys as TripAdvisor, has properties that include the entire island in the rental price: such as a four-bedroom cottage on a six-acre island off the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine; or a villa that sleeps you and 17 of your closest friends on a private marine reserve in Belize.

Roomorama has short-term rentals ranging from sleeping in a cave in Turkey to lounging in a luxury tree house in Kenya.
