If you want to avoid the endless crowds that will overrun London next month but still want to be close enough to take in the sights and sounds of the historic Summer Games, try staying in one of the outlying communities. There are countless options here from a seaside stay in Brighton (only an hour by train from London) to finding hotels in spots like Reading (pronounced “Redding”), St. Albans, Crawley or Hastings – all available at more reasonable rates and all manageable distances from London.

Another fun and interesting (and even educational!) route to go is to find lodging on a university campus. A stay on the University of Oxford campus (a one hour train ride from London) will run you as little as $53 per night for a single or $107 per night for a double. For more information about staying on campus, click here to visit the University of Oxford’s accommodation page.

Perhaps this grab bag of alternative options has whetted your appetite for savings. One thing to remember: You can only purchase tickets to Olympic Games events through your country’s national Olympic Committee. And tickets are going fast. So best make your move now.
