The Essentials

Why More Americans Are Moving Overseas

More and more American citizens — perhaps as a result of the economy or the desire to work remotely — are permanently leaving the U.S.

Last year, more than 180,000 U.S. citizens relocated outside America.

And where are they going?

Switzerland topped the list, followed by New Zealand, then Ireland. In fourth place, the Netherlands, followed by Canada, Norway, Denmark, Australia and Singapore.

And it’s not just the cost of living that factors in the decision — since Switzerland and Norway are not inexpensive countries.

It’s also the standard of living, as well as a country’s political stability, and strong cultural and linguistic ties.
