American now charges a $99 cancellation fee on Basic Economy, while JetBlue will sock you with a $150 penalty. If you bought your ticket through an online travel agency like Expedia, you get zero flight credit or refund.

On many domestic flights, Main Cabin economy fares run only about $30 more than Basic Economy. Spend the extra cash and protect your flexibility.
