When most of you think of the word hostel, you’re automatically thinking of roughing it, spending the night on an uncomfortable cot, and sharing bathroom facilities. But a growing number of hostels are going upscale and at reasonable prices.

Generator Hostels operates in 11 European cities, with hostels featuring private rooms, pillow-top mattresses, individual lighting, and en suite bathrooms.

Some even offer rooftop bars and rates of about $75 a night.

In Denver, Ember Hostel operates out of a 9,000-square-foot historic mansion with a 12-person hot tub and even free espresso.

In New Orleans, The Quisby is a renovated 1929 building right on the St. Charles Streetcar line. Every room has a private bathroom.

There’s a free continental breakfast every morning, a bar downstairs, and rooms start at about $60 a night.
