The Essentials
Rise of Europe’s Urban Swimming Culture
Are you traveling to Europe? They are not just great walking cities, but a growing number of these cities now let you see the destination by literally jumping in the water. It’s all part of something called blue infrastructure, where municipalities are opening up busy waterways for swimmers.
In northeast Paris, you’ll find the Bassin de la Villette, a grand freshwater pool. But get there early, since it’s limited to only 200 people.
Copenhagen and Oslo now boast great bathing locations: the Opera Strands in central Oslo and Sankt Hans Harbor in northern Copenhagen.
Even London is joining the movement, with locations such as Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lido, home to the Serpentine Swimming Club.
