What Airlines Don’t Tell You About Gate-Checked Bags
You go to board your flight, but you’re told by the gate agent that all the overhead bins are full and your bag must be gate-checked.
Here’s what the airline may not tell you: the moment a bag tag is attached to that gate-checked bag, it becomes a fully checked bag. If the airline damages it, the carrier is responsible for repairing it, replacing it, or reimbursing you. That includes handles, straps, zippers, and wheels.
There’s something else many travelers don’t know: the domestic baggage liability limit is currently $4,700 per passenger.
That’s why it’s always a good idea to take a photo of your bag before handing it over and to keep receipts for the contents of both checked bags and any carry-on bag that is gate-checked.
