U.S. Coast Guard Reports Record Low Boating Fatalities

As summer approaches and recreational boating season is upon us, the U.S. Coast Guard has now published its annual safety statistics.

There’s some good news.

In the most recent report, there were the fewest boating fatalities since the U.S. Coast Guard started keeping records more than 50 years ago.

But BUI — boating under the influence — remains the leading cause of accidents, and alcohol remains the leading known contributing factor for boating deaths.

And one common-sense rule is now more important than ever.

If you’re partying on the water, make sure — as you would on land with your car — that you have a designated captain on board beyond just the owner of the boat.
