The Essentials

Lost Baggage Compensation

Do you know your rights if the airline loses your bag?

Most travelers don’t know the rules.

Most airlines will declare a bag lost if they can’t find it between five and 14 days after a flight.

Once that happens, you can receive compensation up to $4,700 per passenger for domestic flights.

The key is to have documentation of what was in your bags, as well as receipts for every item.

Keep in mind that the airlines will compensate you not for replacement value, but for depreciated value.

And that’s why having the receipts is key.

And here’s a fun fact. If the airline does in fact lose your bags, in addition to that compensation, you’re also entitled to a refund of any checked baggage fees.
