The Essentials

Beware of Basic Economy Fares

When searching for the best airfares online, the lowest fare is not always your friend.

In fact, the lowest fare is often the first one quoted, and that can be misleading. In many cases, that initial price is a basic economy fare, which offers very few passenger rights. These restrictions can include limited refund options, no seat selection, baggage limitations, and in some cases even the inability to earn frequent flyer mileage.

A simple philosophy applies: friends don’t let friends fly basic economy.

For an average of about $30 more per segment for a higher fare category, you can gain significantly more flexibility and protection. Always look at the next higher fare before jumping on that first lower price.
