How to Measure the True Cost of a Destination

How expensive is the city you picked as your next destination? What’s the cost of goods and services once you’re on the ground?

One way to prepare is to look at the average salaries of the locals. In Europe, the highest average salaries belong to the folks who live in Luxembourg at $91K. In the Gulf, the salaries in Qatar average $76K. In Australia, it drops to $62K. And if you’re looking for a bargain close to home, try Canada, where the average salaries are slightly more than $53K.

Then measure the actual cost of some basic goods and services, from a Big Mac to a tube of toothpaste to a new suit of clothes. And once you do that, you can then run the numbers that tell you whether the destination is affordable.
