Airport Scams: What Travelers Need to Know

You’ve always been told to beware of travel scams. Most folks think they occur online. And many do.

However, many scams target travelers when they may be most vulnerable at the airport.

There are fake wifi networks that pose as real networks and their sole purpose is to get your phone number and other data. Check with the airport information counter for the free airport WiFi code, but avoid using it for financial transactions or personal banking.

Then, there are the scams where the criminals work in pairs. You’re going through the security checkpoint and put your carry-on bags on the belt. Suddenly, someone cuts in front of you as your bags move down the conveyor belt. But in their bag is all sorts of stuff that triggers a security stop.

And while the agent is inspecting their bag, and you’re still behind that person, their associate has already taken your valuables from your bags that have gone through.

One preventive step is to avoid placing valuables in a tray. Keep them in your closed carry-on bag.
