The Essentials

America’s Faster Trains Are Here, Sort Of

While we still don’t have true high-speed rail in America, we now have a few new train cars that go slightly faster.

In the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak has just launched new higher-speed trains between Boston and Washington DC.

The new cars can hit 160 mph, not for the entire trip, but still better speeds, and offer bigger windows, more comfortable seats, updated cabins, more power outlets, and much better high-speed Wi-Fi.

And on these routes, the strong argument remains that it’s faster and often more efficient, not to mention more affordable, to take the train than to suffer through the airports. And as for true high-speed rail in America? For the moment, even on the newer trains, bring a book, or two, to read.

You’ll still have plenty of time to finish them.
