The Essentials
Big Mac Math for Travelers
When planning your travels, you always try to budget for airfare and accommodations.
But most of us don’t account for the true cost of the trip, basic goods and services on the journey, from taxi rides and tips to retail shopping and, of course, meals.
Each year, The Economist publishes its Big Mac Index, comparing the cost of Big Macs in countries around the world.
It’s a great metric for what you can expect to pay for everything else.
The cost for a Big Mac in the U.S. averages about $6. But in India, it’s just $3.
In Egypt, as low as $2.60. On the opposite end, get out your wallet if you’re in Europe, where the Big Mac averages $7.
A Big Mac will set you back $8 in Uruguay, and the most expensive burger? The $9 Big Mac in Sweden.
I’m not saying you have to buy or eat the burger, but this might help you budget accordingly for your next trip.
