The Essentials

U.S. Airport Security Dilemma for International Travelers

You’ve been security-screened overseas at your departure airport, and now you’re landing at a U.S. airport and connecting to a domestic flight.

Many passengers end up missing connections because they’re forced to go through security screening again, even though they haven’t left the airport’s secure area.

Every passenger arriving in the U.S. must clear customs, collect their bags, recheck them, and go through security again.

The TSA is now testing a one-stop security program with American, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic at Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth airports, as well as at London’s Heathrow for passengers connecting from those U.S. airports.

With this program, passengers won’t need to be cleared again, and their luggage transfers automatically, cutting wait times by more than 40 minutes.
