America’s Loneliest Train Stations

Amtrak is reporting record ridership across the U.S. this year, but the numbers may be deceiving because there are many Amtrak stations that still have fewer passengers than days in the year.

America’s loneliest train station is Sanderson, Texas. Last year, only 247 people used the station to board the Sunset Limited.

Other lonely Amtrak stations include Montgomery and Thurmond, West Virginia — only 732 passengers between them in 2023.

But thankfully, at least for these few Amtrak riders, the trains still stop there on these money-losing routes.
