Why Hotels Are Capping Occupancy

On average, hotels in 2022 are charging 23% more per room than 2019.

In many cases, these same hotels are capping their occupancy at around 60%, but it’s not because they can’t sell the other 40% of the rooms. It’s because they don’t have the staff to support servicing those extra guests.

And one of the continuing problems is housekeeping and maid service. Many hotels have eliminated it. Others have charged up to $40 a day to clean your room, something that used to be part of the rate. And others are saying housekeeping only comes once every four days –when the average stay per guest is three days.

When booking a room, find out the hotel’s policy on maid service before you confirm your reservation, and you might want to ask to adjust the rate accordingly if it’s not offered.
