A growing number of hotels are returning to the days of adding a resort fee to your bill.
These can range from $20 to $80 a night, mostly for services you don’t want or may never use.
In many cases, it’s an attempt to recoup losses incurred during the pandemic, when hotels were empty.
It’s also a way for the hotel to save money on taxes, since room rates are assessed a higher occupancy tax by cities, but resort fees are taxed at lower, state sales tax percentages.
But wait, it gets worse. Some hotels are even trying to charge for other things.
One Indiana hotel adds a $3.87 per night fee for electricity. Another Las Vegas hotel is automatically adding a $5 housekeeping tip (plus tax) per night onto your bill.
Of course, in most cases, the hotels are not disclosing these fees and charges when you make your reservation or when you check in. And because of this failure to disclose, you are within your rights to dispute these charges, either directly with the hotel or with your credit card company.
