The Essentials

What You Should Ask at Hotels

As more and more of us are traveling — and staying in hotels — there are some key questions you need to ask at the front desk before you ever accept your room key.

The first question should be how close your room is to construction. Every hotel is in some form of renovation, and if you don’t ask that question, you could be staying in the jackhammer suite.

Then, you should know if your room is over the ballroom. It’s no problem during the day, but at 2 a.m., that’s when they start throwing out all the empty liquor bottles from the party the night before.

And then, there’s the subject of the wake up call. Don’t ask for that call on the hour. Pick an odd time such as 6:37 a.m. or 7:18 a.m. Why? That’s because everyone else is asking for 6 a.m. or 7 a.m., and you could get lost in the morning wake up calls. but by asking for that off time, that means the clerk must physically write down the time you asked for and won’t forget you.
