A Way You May Avoid Resort Fees

It seems that more and more hotels are emerging from COVID-19 and reinstating those draconian resort fees.

Some hotels now call them destination fees, but no matter how you call them, these insidious charges — that in many cases are never disclosed to travelers at the time they are making their reservations — can add up to $50 a night to the cost of your stay.

But there is one sure way to avoid the fees in the first place.

Book your hotel stay using frequent stay points. Most hotel loyalty programs waive resort fees for stays using points, but remember to confirm this at the moment you make your reservation.

And in any case, if a hotel charges you a resort fee, but did not disclose it at the time you made your reservation or at the time you checked in, you have the right to dispute the charge on your credit card bill.
