More and more airports —  and airlines — are encouraging stopovers and the concept that you don’t just have to connect at a midway airport enroute.

You can spend a day or two — or more — at no additional airfare cost.

And some airlines not only let you get off the plane and extend your trip for free, but they’ll also even throw in free hotel stays as well.

Emirates will let you stopover in Dubai. Air Canada will let you do it in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Iberia lets you do it in Madrid. Japan Airlines offers free stopovers in Tokyo or Osaka. And Tap Air Portugal gives you up to five nights in Lisbon or Porto.
