Travel Tip: How Recent Worldwide Events Impacted Travel to the U.S.

So how do worldwide events impact travel, especially travel to the United States?

The data science team at the travel website, Hopper.com analyzed more than 6 billion flight searches from international countries to see if any recent events like the G7 summit or the Supreme Court’s upholding of President Trump’s travel ban had any impact on folks wanting to travel to the United States.

And the results were a huge drop in foreign traveler interest in travel to America. Following the G7 summit, there was a 21% decrease in Canadian interest traveling to the United States, an 11% drop from France and another 11% drop from Italy.

The recent border issues including separating children from their parents may be behind the 8% drop from Mexico.

And after the Supreme Court upheld the Trump travel ban, Hopper searched 96 separate countries and 70% of them showed decreased interest.

What about the trade and tariff issues? Not many people realize that inbound travel to the U.S. is a foreign export, and travel interest to the U.S. from China also dropped 8%.

That’s not good news if you’re in the travel industry, but it’s great news if you want to travel from America. There are a lot of empty airline seats and decreased international airfares as a result.
