Travel Tip: The U.S. Dollar’s Value Overseas This Summer

Locations in this article:  Beijing, China Buenos Aires, Argentina

It’s a great summer if you happen to be spending U.S. dollars overseas. And if you plan properly, certain countries have become outright bargains.

For example, the South Africa rand is very depressed against the U.S. Dollar, which now gets you about 13.3 rands. What does that mean? The entire country is on sale for U.S. travelers, especially when it comes to local goods and services. For example, a three course meal in a great restaurant will run you an average of $16.

In India, the rupee just hit a record low: for one U.S. dollar, you will get 68.66 rupees. How does that translate? A room for two people in the 4-star hotel in Agra–the home city of Taj Mahal–can cost as low as 1,500 rupees a night, which is $21.

When it comes to the Chinese currency, the yuan is also down against the dollar. Want to rent an Airbnb apartment in the center of Beijing? You can for just $300 a week.

And last but not least, Argentina is where the peso this year has lost one third of its value. The current exchange rate is nearly 28 pesos to the U.S. dollar. Last year it was just 17.  It’s time to go on vacation to Buenos Aires and do your Christmas shopping there now.
