Travel Tip: How Some Hotels Are Changing Their Security Policies

Locations in this article:  Las Vegas, NV

In the wake of last year’s tragic shooting at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, a number of hotels are reassessing their security protocols.

Disney Resorts has reevaluated its policy for guests using Do Not Disturb signs, and will now check rooms more often, regardless of the sign hanging on guest doors.

Hilton has announced a similar policy. All guests will be given a card that reads:

“We understand and respect your need for privacy. But the hotel reserves the right to visually inspect all guest rooms every 24 hours to ensure the well-being of our guests and confirm the condition of the room.”

Other hotels are changing the Do Not Disturb sign to read Room Occupied.

Some hotels are also discussing ways to ramp up security even more—following the airport model to protect the hotel and guests from anyone trying to bring weapons or explosives to their rooms. They will be scanning guest bags before they are brought up to the rooms by the bellman.

This is a practice already in place in many hotels in the Middle East and parts of Africa.
