Travel Tip: FAA to Investigate Shrinking Airline Seats

Recently, a federal court judge ordered the FAA to thoroughly investigate the case of the incredible shrinking airline seats.

The facts here are true.

The width of many coach seats on many airlines is indeed shrinking.

So is the pitch—the distance from the back of the seat in front of you to your knees…or, in some cases, your neck.

Since the 1970s, that pitch has gone from 35 inches to 28 inches today.

The federal court has asked the FAA to set minimum seat size standards.

This is not just for basic health and comfort—but for safety.

Do smaller, more cramped seats impact the ability of flight crews and passengers to evacuate a plane safely?

The FAA was only ordered to study the problem.

If the agency’s history in this area is any indication, that could take years.

So if you’re waiting for some good news about your seats, don’t hold your breath.
