Travel Tip: How History Can Be A Travel Guide

Locations in this article:  Athens, Greece Florence, Italy Vienna, Austria

viennaWhen planning a trip, many of us want to go where the smart travelers go.

But what about going where the smart people already live?

There’s an argument that cities hold the key to creative genius, and there’s a new book by Eric Weiner called The Geography of Genius: A Search for the World’s Most Creative Places from Ancient Athens to Silicon Valley.

The book pinpoints some key travel destinations: Athens, Hangzhou in China, Florence, Edinburgh, Vienna, and of course, Silicon Valley.

Each was known—in a particular century—as the world capital for innovation.

Florence, for example, was known in the 16th century as the Medicis of the Renaissance.

In the 18th century, Vienna was known for innovation in music, and in the 20th century Silicon Valley is known for innovation in technology.

It’s an unusual travel guide book well worth reading with lots of lessons to be learned.
