Travel Tip: The Perils of Sitting Down for Long Periods of Time
Taking a long drive or a long flight? The length of time you sit can carry some huge consequences.
The most recent studies about sedentary behavior show that when you sit for extended periods of time, you raise the risk for dozens of chronic conditions, from cancer and diabetes to cardiovascular disease.
There’s a reason there are rest stops on highways—they’re not just for going to the bathroom, but for standing up and walking around.
On an airplane, you need to do the same.
Get up at least once every three hours you’re in the air to stand up and walk around.
Keep in mind that standing burns about one calorie more per minute than sitting. In four hours, that’s 240 calories burned!
