Most of you already know that air fares are going up, and in some cases, way up.

Airlines have shrunk capacity and cut routes and flight frequencies in many markets.

As a result, the law of supply and demand has kicked in and airfares are up between 4 and 17 percent.

But what about hotels? In most cases, room rates are also jumping.

On average, rooms in New York are up 24 percent. In Boston, there’s been a 17 percent increase, and San Francisco is 22 percent more expensive.

But there are some surprises. Average hotel costs in Los Angeles are actually down 14 percent.

In Miami, they’ve dropped 17 percent and New Orleans is 11 percent cheaper.

Why? There’s more construction in these cities, and the number of rooms has increased.

In those cases, the law of supply and demand is actually working in your favor.
