Travel Tip: The Difference Between A Hurricane Watch & Warning

hurricaneWe’re approaching an important time of year for travel. No, it’s not just summer vacation. It’s also the 2015 hurricane season.

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. That covers everywhere from the North Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

We’ve already seen some tropical storms forming, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re in for an early start to the season.

If history is any indicator, the peak season for hurricanes is usually August and September.

Before you travel, pay attention to the local news and be aware of the language specifics.

A “hurricane watch” means that hurricane conditions could be experienced within 48 hours.

A “hurricane warning” is a more solid indicator that winds of at least 74 mph are expected to hit within 36 hours.

Unfortunately, at that point, it’s too late to purchase travel insurance. So prepare yourself by purchasing a policy well ahead of time if you’re planning to travel to hurricane-prone regions this season.
