Travel Tip: Technology That Can Help Prevent Distracted Driving

Car DriverDistracted driving is a serious problem, especially when it comes to technology inside our vehicles.

So how can you protect yourself or your children?

It’s estimated that distracted driving has contributed to more than 1,000 injury crashes a DAY in America.

One item called Surge’ON prevents you from using any handheld electronic device while driving.

You put a smart tag onto your phone, and then store it in a lockbox. Only when that device is safely docked and locked away will the car start.

Ford and Lincoln vehicles use the MyKey technology, which can be programmed with a Do Not Disturb feature to block incoming phone calls and hold text messages.

It also has other features like limiting the car’s top speed.

A tool called DriveID puts cell phones into a safe mode when it’s activated. Parents can set what’s allowed—like navigation or Bluetooth calls—and block incoming calls and texts while the car is in use.

Obviously, nothing beats education when it comes to combating distracted driving, but a little technology can go a long way to secure some peace of mind.
