Travel Tip: What to Know About this Flu Season

Doctor wearing maskWe’re in the midst of a pretty severe flu season, and for travelers, that can be bad news. Here’s what you need to know about what’s out there.

Travelers are especially at risk of catching communicable diseases. They’re often in public places, enclosed areas, and high-touch spaces. Also, being run down and dehydrated can make you more susceptible.

The CDC is reporting high flu activity in 22 states, and has officially called it an epidemic.

The bad news is that the vaccine released this year isn’t a perfect match for the strain of flu, but that doesn’t mean you should skip it. It can still protect you, and it can decrease the severity of your symptoms.

If you do get the flu, the CDC recommends that you talk to your doctor about antivirals like Tamiflu.

As always, common sense has to prevail. Don’t get lax about washing your hands, and if that’s not possible, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Plus, don’t be afraid to wipe down those high-touch areas before YOU touch them.
