Peter Greenberg Worldwide–Avalon, Catalina Island–May 17, 2014

CatalinaYou may remember the lyrics to the famous song by The Four Preps, 26 Miles (Santa Catalina), but it turns out Catalina Island is only 22 miles across the sea.

The resort island was once owned by William Wrigley, Jr., the chewing gum magnate. However, in 1972 the family transferred ownership to the Santa Catalina Island Company and created the Catalina Island Conservancy.

With 88 percent of the island now preserved, Wrigley’s efforts to maintain the island’s nature beauty and wildlife have paid off.

This week, we broadcast from the Pavilion Hotel – a spot that looks over downtown Avalon and its historic waterfront. We’ll talk with Avalon’s former mayor Robert Kennedy, along with the great-granddaughter of William Wrigley, Jr. himself. Want Hollywood history? So much of it happened in Catalina. And then we’ll clue you in to the hidden gems of the island outside of Avalon. We’ve got that and much more from Catalina Island.
