Travel Tip: Apps to Improve the Cruise Experience

It may be prohibitively expensive to use your cell phone on a cruise ship, but there are reasons to carry your smartphone on board. I’m talking about apps that can help navigate the cruise experience.

Cruisers on the Norwegian Epic and the Norwegian Breakaway can use the iConcierge app on their smartphones, even without a Wi-Fi connection. With that, you can book shore excursions without having to stand in line, make specialty dinner reservations, and—perhaps most importantly—keep track of your onboard spending.

What’s the one thing every cruiser complains about it? Getting lost on the ship! That’s where Cruise Ship Mates comes in handy because they have all the deck plans without requiring an Internet connection.

If you can get online, you can use the app to chat with other cruisers on your trip, or plan upcoming trips. And if planning on the go is mostly what you’re looking for, check out Cruise Finder. It was created by a cruise booking company, so they have an agenda, but the information is solid. It gets you access to deals, deck plans, ship photos, and other features to help you make a decision.
