#10 Sedona, Arizona

Population: 10,000

Getting there: The closest major airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), a 2-hour drive away. If driving from other parts of the country, take State Route (SR) 179, designated as an All American Roadby the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), based on its natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

The crown jewel of Red Rock Country, Sedona offers a multitude of options for soft adventure from hiking and kayaking to yoga, swimming and biking. There’s an artist community that is palpable, attracting creative types from around the country looking to get off the grid for a bit. The other draw to Sedona is a somewhat mysterious metaphysical culture – from the Native American roots to being able to hike to so-called vortexes of energy.

Sedona is known for its Pink Jeep Tours – and it’s a must do activity while visiting. A new zip line is scheduled to open in June 2013 as well. Called “The Predator” it will take zippers across a previously unseen section of their Out of Africa Wildlife Park in nearby Camp Verde. During the summer is also when the Bluegrass and Star Festivals come to town.

Where to stay: While there are many reasons to visit Sedona, the luxury at Enchantment Resort alone provides one of them. Set within the red rock landscape, the property offers top-notch accommodations, five-star dining, and access to some of the city’s best hiking. It is a place where you feel the relaxation set in almost immediately. Infused with Native American culture and inspiration, their award-winning Mii amo spa provides unique treatments and services that are some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the world. If you come to Sedona just to experience this resort and spa, that would be fine –it’s a guarantee that you’ll return home rejuvenated.

Side trip: The Grand Canyon, South Rim

Two hours from Sedona is the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The more touristy section, it is also the most photographed and recognizable section with vast, breathtaking views.  The Grand Canyon is easily Arizona’s most distinguishable landmark and a natural wonder that you simply have to see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end. If time allows, visit the Canyon’s western edge, where you can hike to the spectacular Havasupai Falls.
