Travel Tip: Airline Baggage Delivery Services

American Airlines has announced it’s offering a baggage delivery service so you can avoid waiting at the luggage carousel. So is this a deal…or no deal?

American’s new service is offered through a third-party company, where you pay about $30 to deliver one bag, $40 for two bags, and $50 for up to 10 bags. If they have to go any farther than 40 miles, it’ll cost you another dollar per mile.

That’s already adding up…and here’s the real catch: That’s on TOP of the checked bag fee. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. WHY would you pay the airlines to lose your luggage?

You might remember that United Airlines tried this type of service a couple of years ago, by partnering with FedEx. That one didn’t last too long.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a fan of luggage delivery, but I don’t believe in letting the airlines take control of the process. Instead, use a service like FedEx, UPS or even the US Postal Service to ship door to door. And for anyone who wants to complain about the price, use the 3-day advance or Ground service, and you’ve just reduced your costs significantly.
