Slideshow: What the Church of Scientology Will Let You See

These days, it seems like you can’t go anywhere without seeing the word “Scientology'” in a headline….it always seems to be center stage — at least every time Tom Cruise gets a divorce. Stay tuned as the Mormon church will continue to take the spotlight as well, due to the presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney. If you’re looking to learn a little more about the Church of Scientology, its origins and its membership, no better way than to travel directly to the sources.

1. Tilden, Nebraska

Let’s start at the very beginning and head to this small Nebraska town where Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was born. Hubbard’s father was in the navy, which meant that they moved around a lot and didn’t stay in Tilden for very long. The house where Hubbard was born still stands–to take a look you can stop in at the local library and get directions. There were rumors of a Scientology initiative to raise money for a statue or plaque in Tilden, but it seems not to have come to fruition.
