Icarus Award: Adding Insult to Injury

Locations in this article:  Philadelphia, PA

With sewage falling from the sky and passengers being pickpocked as they go through security, this week’s Icarus Award add insult to the injuries that come from travel. Find out how travelers are being accosted this week and vote for the worst abuse.

Wrong Way on the Runway

Car chases seem to be all the rage with Icarus nominees, but this week 24-year-old Kenneth Richard Mazik took it one step further when he was apprehended for driving drunk, pursued by the cops, along the Philadelphia International Airport runway. Flights were halted around 11:15 am in the morning, eventually resulting in about 15 delayed flights, on Thursday morning after Matzik plowed through a construction fence and drove onto the runway. After five minutes later, he was apprehended and now faces DUI and reckless endangerment charges.

Sh*t Storm

Living in the flight path of Kennedy International Airport lets you watch planes take off and land at one of the world’s busiest airports. Unfortunately for Artie Hughes and his wife in Malverne, New York, their scenic views were marred on Monday night when a plane left a parting present. The couple was sitting out on their deck when they felt an oily black-green liquid hit their faces. The liquid in question appears to have been treated sewage from the plane. Further droppings landed throughout the property. Speaking with local news station 1010 Wins, Hughes noted that an FAA or Port Authority had told him that there had been “a lavatory incident.” Hughes is also asking for further investigation into the incident.

Catch Your Wallet If I Can

Impersonating a flight attendant can get you more than a few extra peanuts. On Tuesday, Jean Paulino was caught at Newark Liberty International Airport pocketing over $100 and two drivers licenses from a couple passing through security. Paulino chatted with travelers and then when their backs were turned he took their money. Too bad he was caught on camera. Once in custody, Port Authority Police realized that his uniform was hoax. Paulino has been arrested and charged with theft.

Brawling Brits

Actor Colin Firth was on board a British Airways flight this Wednesday when two passengers got into a fight that even flight attendants were unable to control. The fight started when one passenger accused  another of stealing. Upon landing in Heathrow the two men were arrested. Firth and family also arrived safely and no damage was done to the dashing actor.

Sticky Fingered Baggage Handlers

Three laptops, two cameras, cartons of cigarettes and cash were just some of the items that Joshua Wright and LaShawn Fontenot two 25-year-old Logan International Airport baggage handlers were able to pocket.  While TSA officers are being watched by surveillance video, baggage handlers have easier and unmonitored access to valuables. The two men were busted in a hidden camera sting and have since been arrested for theft. The men are due back in court in April and have been banned from returning to Logan Airport.
