In typical Yankee fashion, the cost of the week is about 25 percent higher than both Pittsburgh and Detroit…but hey it’s the Yankees what can you expect? (In fairness a portion of this camp’s tuition is donated to Yankee charities for kids and does become tax deductible.)
The Yankees moved their spring training base from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa in 1976 which is where I am tonight. Tomorrow morning is an optional pre-camp conditioning clinic in Clearwater and tomorrow night we get to meet the Yankee legends that will be coaching the 100 or so campers in addition to meeting and having dinner with our team for the next five days.
If that’s not enough to cause a restless night I’ll also get a chance to play ball for the first time in 43 years with my partner for the week who you’ll meet tomorrow. It’s not my Tigers camp buddy Fred. In fact I believe he’ll be the anti-Fred.
On July 1, 1966 I had all the excitement of a 14 year old getting ready to leave for camp. Kinda the same way I felt this morning!
