Ask Peter: Peter Answers Your Travel Questions–1.14.12

Locations in this article:  Fort Lauderdale, FL Miami, FL Orlando, FL Tampa, FL

Nancy in Orlando, Florida commented: Having moved from the New York metropolitan area where there are zillions of flights to anywhere, I am now in Orlando, Florida and finding it difficult just to find a nonstop flight anywhere. I am looking for a flight for our annual sojourn to St. Martin. The most reasonable and hassle-free flight I can find is on Spirit, but I don’t know anything about this airline. How dependable are they? Are there any safety issues?

Peter replied: I’m sure Spirit is dependable and I’m sure they’re safe, but they’re also dependably terrible in terms of customer service. I like to say Spirit’s modo is “we’re not happy until you’re not happy.” The airline charges for everything: they charge you to check a bag, they charge you to carry on a bag, they even charge you up to $34 to book online. The only way to get around the online booking fees is to make your reservation at the airport. No one’s going to do that and they know that too. So they’re hosing you left and right. If you can put up with all this nonsense, then go ahead and fly Spirit. However, I’m one of those people who believe you should vote with your wallet. If you’re insulted like this, why would you want to give them your business. Instead, consider flying through Fort Lauderdale, Tampa or Miami.
