Travel Tip: What You Need to Know This Flu Season

Virus closeupWe all know that traveling is one of the easiest ways to pick up a cold or flu virus, but there are a few things you need to know to better your odds.

You thought that bird flu was over? Not exactly, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam are all countries that have reported having cases of the virus this year.

Of course, if you are traveling to any of the above areas, you know to avoid any direct contact with poultry, but you should also obey common flu practices.

Get your flu shot about two weeks before you leave. On average, it takes that long for your body to develop the necessary immunities.

Avoid being in highly trafficked areas – and if you do find yourself there, as most tourist do – make sure to cover you mouth and nose whenever you cough.

Wash your hands more than you normally would, which is more than you normally think you do.

Whether or not you use hand sanitizer, consider how many times your hands touch handles, door nobs and bathroom fixtures and then consider how many times right after that you touch your mouth or nose. The more you are conscious of this, the better you will be.
