Hurricane Irene-Related Cancellations Snarl Travel Nationwide

With thousands of flights having been cancelled and airports up and down the East Coast having had their operations impacted by Hurricane Irene, it’s going to take some time for things to get back to normal.

CBS Travel Editor Peter Greenberg spoke with Jan Crawford on The Early Show about why a slew of delays or airport closures can have serious ripple effects throughout an airline.

As he tries to try to help travelers sort out the mess, Peter explains why it is that serious delays or widespread cancellations can have such widespread effects in our national, or even the global, travel system.

When planes and crews get out of sync with where they are supposed to be, even airports thousands of miles away can end up with missing planes, crew shortages, or any number of other difficulties.

When this happens, travelers need to be prepared. It can really save time, money, and headaches knowing how to deal with natural disasters affecting the travel system.

So how should travelers cope with these problems? What should travelers do to deal with the situation? And will airlines be back on schedule in time for Labor Day?
