Hidden Gems: Horsepower & Christchurch, New Zealand

Locations in this article:  Auckland, New Zealand

Christchurch, New Zealand is one of the few places where you can step off the plane and be minutes away from starting an adventure.

Yes, there’s biking, hiking, rafting, golfing, and even bungee jumping. But, there’s also some unexpected activities.

How about harness racing? With experienced racers for your guide, you can go up to 30 mph when you race these championship horses. You learn the basics and then have a chance to compete in your first 800-meter race.

Maybe you once dreamed of being a polar explorer? Well, did you know that Christchurch is the training ground and last stop for all Antarctic explorations?

At the International Antarctic Center in Christchurch, you can take part in interactive exhibits and activities designed to mimic the arctic experience. There’s even a room that lets you experience minus 5 degrees Celsius.

And there’s even more adventures just outside of Christchurch. In the scenic town of Akaroa you can go sea kayaking in the harbor created by an extinct volcano.
