Travel Tip: Hurricane Museums

Locations in this article:  Chicago, IL

hurricaneOK, boys and girls, it’s that time of year again: I’m talking about hurricane season. But how much do you know about these natural disasters beyond what’s in the news?

The Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum just launched its new exhibit to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Bob and the 1991 Perfect Storm, telling real stories about real people.

Few among us will ever forget Hurricane Katrina. But the Louisiana State Museum in the French Quarter now has $7.5 million exhibit that tells personal stories of the 2005 hurricane, as well the science behind these events.

If it’s the science that intrigues you, keep your eyes open for the Field Museum’s traveling exhibit, “Inside Natural Disasters.”

What’s cool are the hands-on, interactive experiences, which are designed for both kids and adults.

And last, but not least, the Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry has a permanent exhibit called “Science Storms” that really goes into the physics behind all the major types of natural disasters.

After all, the more you know about an event, the more prepared you can be if it happens to you.
